This painting started as an experiment.
I wanted to see if I could create an entirely neutral painting.
So I did.
I finished it, stepped away from the canvas, and thought I was done.
But I had no peace about it.
There wasn't anything necessarily wrong with the painting. It simply didn't feel like a Jennifer Mehling original.
So I went back.
I added the pink.
I added the green.
I let the color come through in the way it naturally wants to when I paint.
And there it was—the peace of authenticity.
It made me realize that pink and green haven't simply become colors I enjoy using in my artwork. There has been a pattern of them woven throughout my life.
They were there in childhood—from T-ball to the wallpaper in my room.
They followed me into my first apartment.
Years later, they became part of my daughter's nursery.
And now, they continue to find their way onto my canvases.
Long before I ever thought about developing a recognizable palette or finding my voice as an artist, those colors were already part of my story.
It is how He made me.
His Reward Is With Him became a reminder that sometimes we don't need to become more like everyone else. We need the courage to recognize, embrace, and steward what God has already placed within us.
There is a peace that comes with authenticity.
And perhaps part of the reward is realizing that who He created us to be was never something we needed to paint over.
